Forum for Sustainable Business 2012

Dear fans of the Forum for Sustainable Business,

we are very glad that almost 150 professionals across the market have supported the 2nd year of the event focused on sustainability by positive energy, active discussion and enlightened interest in sustainable business development in all its contexts, whether it's a link to the consumers´ value orientation, harmonisation of relations with partners, responsibility towards employees or reduction of business impact on environment.

The initial block, chaired by the editor of the weekly Respect, Tomáš Sacher, has paid particular attention to the attitude of top management of leading global companies to the topic of sustainability. Customers are more active, they have clear expectations – they want big companies to be fully aware of their influence and act in a fair and more responsible way, considering long-term consequences of their actions. And corporations’ bosses are really aware of this reality, as was proved by the contribution Chris Skirrow, partner of PwC Czech Republic, as well as by comments of Nick Main, Global Leader of Sustainability and Climate Change Service of Deloitte. According to him, strategic view on sustainability may also contribute to better management of risks associated with business.

The attitude of Czech state administration was represented by Robert Szurman, from the Czech Ministry of industry and trade who brought up a number of strategic governmental documents that are linked to the subject of sustainable business. There is however an obvious lack of practical evaluation of these strategies, which must not remain only on paper in Czech practice.

The second conference bock targeted on long-term planning as a key sustainability parameter gained the most positive response. According to survey among participants results of the survey, presentations of both international speakers - the main speaker of Forum, Vice President for sustainability of SAP - Martin Hill, and Stewart Rassier, former Director of Saatchi and Saatchi S were highly appreciated for their rich inspiration, strength of ideas, interactivity, enthusiasm for the business, and overall practicality.

Afternoon program dealt with sustainability across company. The first contribution of the Director of corporate communications and sustainable development in NWR Petra Mašínová, focused on the subject of company reporting was rated as the best performance of the entire Forum, thanks to its openness, an interesting insight, and bright and human discourse. Her speech brought clear arguments why is the reporting according to international methodology so beneficial for companies. Responsible behaviour, the positive and negative communication, fairness and transparency, which are supported by a comprehensive reporting contribute to the sustainability of business. And allow you to obtain and maintain a public consensus with activities that might bring negative impact on its surroundings. Agustin Lucardi from Interface FLOR showed what means sustainability for the company, which thanks to it has become a global leader.

The second part of the afternoon block was dedicated to practical examples of sustainability application in company production represented by Jan Brazda of Knauf Insulation, or demonstration of cooperation between supplier and retailer introduced by representatives of the companies Unilever and Tesco. Participants especially applauded to Managing Director of a successful Czech company ET Netera Martin Cernohorsky who addressed them by a very refreshing speech. In his opinion most important are people. If employees do not behave in accordance with sustainability, then it is a reason to consider where the error – on whose side is.

Key conclusions of the forum were summarized in the final debate chaired by Dana Zadrazilova, Head of the Department of Business Enterprise and Commercial Communications of University of Economics in Prague.

Let's wish the word sustainability is not only the modern word, but the day-to-day reality.

Looking forward to seeing you at the next Forum on March 19, 2013!
